Low quality shoe makers unable to compete in Dongguan
October 3, 2014
President of the Dongguan Leather and Footwear Association - Wang Shengpei - has announced via the Chinese Leather Industry Association (CLIA) that Dongguan has seen a 30% decrease of its shoe makers as Dongguan moves to target higher-end markets.
It is believed that as companies focus on the high-end markets to remain profitable, those companies unable to raise their game to compete have suffered. The CLIA also states that “shoe exports in Dongguan slightly dropped but value remains as much as that at the same time of (the) previous year”.
“Sales of the high-end leather shoes and goods surged over 100% compared with two years ago (and now) accounts for 70% of total sales revenues of leather goods in the city” reported the same CLIA source when speaking to world footwear.com
A telling sign that the Dongguan shoe industry is positioning itself to produce high-end products is the increase in leather imports. It is understood that shoemakers in the region are looking further afield as domestic supplies do not reach their current quality requirements.
